Photography: Turning a hobby into a business / freelance opportunity

Hey there.

So, please be a bit gentle in your replies, as a bit of a newbie question: What might be some options for turning a photography hobby into a business / freelance work?

Obviously in the same boat as many due to the pandemic, with work hard to come by and remote working now more of a viable option. Have some equipment so might as well use it to generate some income.

Should I try to build up a portfolio / website / Instagram, and display an aptitude for certain types of work? Approach local businesses / individuals and start small and collect a few testimonials / references? Enter photography competitions to get my name out there a little? Is it better to specialise in a certain area / on a particular aesthetic (products, architecture, fashion, portraits, reportage etc), so as not to confuse potential clients?

Appreciate any advice. I'm open to most things. Specific ideas would be more handy than broad, work-ethic stuff.
