For anyone using the Canon RF 24-240mm lens, is it possible to use smaller than 72mm lens filters on it without significant vignetting?

It looks like the glass up front is significantly narrower than where the lens filter threads are. But I also know the lens already had vignetting that has to be corrected. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the hard vignette is the outside edge. On my 35mm eg I can use smaller filters with a step down, which is what I'd like to do with the 24-240mm.

Thanks!

What is your end goal? What is the benefit?

I did not try any smaller filters on mine, but 24mm generally needs the slim filters to avoid vignetting on any lens. So I would not expect you'd have luck. Especially on a lens that vignettes badly with no filter at all.

Maybe try buying the cheapest 67mm filter on ebay and see if you can get away with it. There are UV filters from China for under $3 shipped. But it is not like 67mm filters are cheaper or meaningfully smaller to carry. So I'm still confused as to why you'd need to do this.

I don't use UV filters. We're talking much more expensive and harder to find IR and UV pass (not cut) filters.

I may just go with a rear filter if they're currently available.

Is there a huge price difference between 67 and 72mm? Surely you have no hope of going smaller than that with a wide angle lens.   The UV filter suggestion was meant as a proof of concept test.
