At least with the copy of this lens that I had it was not close to the sharpness of the 14-24mm f/2.8 or the Nikon 18-35mm f/3.5G lens and the latter lens also uses 77mm size screw on filters.

20-28 seems to be the sweet spot on this lens, at the 16 mm and 35 mm end not so much, going on a D810.

There must be a lot of variations, because mine is very sharp, at least stopped down a a little,  from 16-24, but not as sharp as I get towards 35mm.  Surprisingly, I had purchased the 20mm f1.8g used from KEH for the wider aperture and sunstars, and found my 16-35 to be noticeably sharper away from center.  I quickly returned it.  It's a very nice lens at a good price if you can get it with a decent rebate or discount.  I only wish it made decent sunstars like the 20mm does.  I really don't get why Canon seems to be able to make wide angle zooms that produce good sharp sunstars, but Nikon does not.
