R5 with RF 100-500mm vs EF 100-400II
4

I have had the R5 along with the EOS R for seven months but still keep my 5D MK IV, 7D Mk II and 70D.   There is a lot to get used to and many new learn learn  using the mirrorless even with lots of Canon DSLR experience.

The R5 is now my primary and best camera but I use the R and DSLRs for many things since they are remain good cameras.   I have had the EF 100-400 II some time and had the EF 100-400 before that for many years.  I regard the EF 100-400II an excellent lens but I recent got the RF 100-500 along with the RF 1.4X and 2.0X TCs after reading some many impressive reviews along with great comments by forum members.

I was hoping that the RF 100-500 with TCs might offer at least a little but probably small improvements in four areas:

1. reduced weight

2. increase reach

3.improved focus speed

4.improved stabilization

Since I have only the lens a very short time and only a few hundred shots.  I have limited experience with most of my experience using the lens as a 100-500mm and as a 600-1000mm (with 2X TC).   I have to say my short term experience has been great and I am a happy user.  I believe the four areas of improvement are present and seen in my first shots.

Whether or not this improvement is worth the expensive $3900 price will vary a lot with the shooter and what the camera is camera is used for.   There are no right answers or wrongs.  No one lens is fits all needs.   For me and my use this new RF lens and extenders are worth it  but this route is not for everyone.   A lot money could be saved  with using the Canon  100-400 Mk II or the Sigma 150-600C. There are many very good lenses availble which are easier to afford.
