Ok, so technically there is no difference in image quality, so what...there's a huge difference in practical usability for some usage scenarios.

I own both D850 and D500 and if I know I'm going to need the reach, I'll always put the lens on the D500...I have access to a faster frame rate, larger image of my subject in the viewfinder, more AF coverage in the frame, bigger buffer if I'm shooting a burst and I feel like the D500 is a bit quieter with less shutter shock.  To me, these things matter more than some some nominal difference in image resolution, dynamic range or slightly different ultimate noise level.
