Upper Tangent Arc
2

This is not something you see every day.

The sky was right for some optical effects from ice crystals. but there were no Sun Dogs, and just the barest hint of a 22 degree halo. But this bit of rainbow was prominent. It is known as the Upper Tangent Arc, (since when the 22 degree halo is visible it is tangent to that circle).

I've never seen this phenomenon before, even though I see Sun Dogs and the 22 degree halo fairly often (more often than rainbows).

One might also say that a 'sun pillar' is present, but there are other crepuscular rays visible. I thought a sun pillar needed to be a single object, but I could be wrong,
