I'm looking at buying an OMD E5 Mk iii. Used on Mpb is around £769, new on HDEW Cameras is £649 as a grey import with 3 year (I believe to be 3rd-party) warranty.

Wondering what people's thoughts are on these two options?

I have read several previous threads on HDEW but nothing comparing pros and cons of used vs grey import directly!

Thanks in advance!

The only reasons that I can think of for buying a used camera over a new grey import are:
  • If the used camera is significantly cheaper (which would normally be the case).
  • If the used camera comes with a lens and other accessories which makes the bundle significantly cheaper.
  • If the used camera still has a long time to run on the manufacturer's warranty and the warranty is transferable to the new buyer.
  • If the import duty and VAT situation make it riskier to take the camera on overseas trips. HDew should be able to advise you on this - I would export their products to be duty and VAT paid.
Other than this, it is clearly less risky to buy a new camera instead of a used one.

Hi,

Thanks for that Chris, really helpful! . I noticed this in the HDEW terms and conditions

"Please note that by making a purchase on this website you will be acting as the importer of the product for all purposes including all customs regulations, copyright and trademark laws. You accept that the role of HDEW Cameras is limited to sourcing products and making them available for you to import directly from the country of origin.By purchasing a product through this website you authorise us to make arrangements for clearance of customs on your behalf for the products you have ordered."

I'll give them a ring I think!

Anybody else have good or bad experiences with HDEW?

They have a good reputation and a shop, I think somewhere in Surrey.

Just to add, HDEW has been very good responding to my email queries:
  • Is VAT already paid and do you provide a receipt confirming this?
    • "We are VAT registered, and can provide an invoice upon request after you have placed an order."
  • So are all UK import duties and taxes already paid by you?
    • "Yes, I can confirm everything is covered in our website prices, and you will not be subjected to any extra charges."
  • My understanding is that this is a grey import.
    • "We do import our stock from outside of the UK, however all of the products we sell are to UK specification. You will also have a three year warranty which covers you for mechanical faults, breakdown, parts and labour and this will be repaired in the UK through an Olympus Repair agent."
So looks good as far as I can tell, fingers crossed!
