photoshop hair masking OOF areas

Hi all,

You people who shoot wide open / narrow depth of field, how do you manage hair masking. I have scenario where the hair moves into the out of focus areas so edge detection is not working. The out of focus parts of the hair effectively become a blend of hair colour and the background colour I want to swap for a new background.

I've tried desaturating the unwanted background colour but it's not giving me the result I want yet. I'm thinking my next approach will be to blend the out of focus hair with the new background layer but the desaturated old background is now grey.

I guess I could convert the old background into the new background colour and not mask it in the problem areas. Think I have answered my question but it's a fudge.

Is there a best practise approach for this.
