Nobody sane in his mind would ship such an expensive but small and light lens by sea-freight. After all, things like flowers, lobsters and even wine bottles and cheeses travel by air too.

Just the interest on the $7,500 that lens costs, over 6-8 weeks seafreight end-to-end transit time, would pay for the airfreight.

Good point, but I don't imagine companies ship one single item at a time. I would expect a bulk consignment of mixed camera/lens stock to be shipped to the European distribution centre.

A container load of camera kit would be worth multiple millions of £.  Too valuable to entrust to sea travel I'd think.
