I've had no problems with 3' x 4' drawings with the D810 on a tripod using a 24-70 lens. And the Tamron 24-70 would resolve all of the fine detail in a blueprint of that size.

What is your setup? Simple tripod mount? Vertical or horizontal shoot?

Addendum to my response:

I just read your post about using the tripod tilted with a step stool. That seems more shaky than using a step ladder for height and a tripod to provide the horizontal separation and camera mount. I found it helpful to have a stable setup to be able to easily adjust the camera sensor parallel to the artwork to avoid keystone distortion.

Also if you use a tall step ladder for height you can get more camera to subject separation and thus avoid using such a wide angle lens which has more distortion. In my copy work the artist was very sensitive to any distortion.
