Life's a beach, 2021 edition
13

After a lost year, I finally made it back to my beach house. I was sitting, talking on the phone, and looking out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca...

This huge dorsal fin came out of the water not more than 20 feet offshore, right in front of me.  (the seabed drops off very steeply here) I grabbed my birding camera, a (cough) Nikon, with the Sigma 150-600 C lens.

Can orcas have twins?

the tail of a whale, or maybe the tale of a whale

These are all uncropped, so you can see how close these magnificent animals were. There were at least 7 in this pod. The 2 fully grown orcas in these shots are females (curved dorsal fin) There was a male further out.

There were also a few birds around...

This is a 'pigeon guillemot'. They behave like ducks, but they aren't ducks. There were several small flocks of them on the beach.

(I have this lens in both Sigma and Nikon mount. I won't say it's impossible to get good wildlife pix with the Sigma, but it's much easier with the Nikon.)
