I don't have any Thom Hogan's book, but I have some from Steve Perry.

His books are constructive and detailed, and every time he makes some update for small correction or new firmware, the updated book is free of charge for the owner of the previous version.

I suggest Perry's book as an excellent alternative.

Actually, the two authors are complimentary. I have Thom's first Zed book, which helps as reference etc, and Steve's AF book is indispensible IME but it's no camera manual about all the specific models

Steve's focus on exposure and AF as generic subjects across current Nikon gear. Thom's are a series of extremely detailed guidebooks/manuals to the different cameras.

David Busch also writes a series of similar 3rd party books on Nikon cameras

I agree that Steve’s and Thom’s ebooks are complimentary.  I have and use both and have benefited from each.  Both recommended.  (I haven’t seen David Busch’s books, so no comment there, pro or con.)
