A hypothetical question for the lens designers.

Hello folks,

Imagine we have an old obsolete lens. We are frustrated that the image circle of the lens is too small for our modern sensor. Yet what we see in the vignette ridden photo is a ‘mighty fine’ image!

Crop it out?.... Sure.

But; is it possible to remove the back element and experiment with placing another ‘wider’ back element in - from other broken lenses – and maybe, just maybe, slightly expand the final image that hits the sensor?

I assume that the mount to sensor distance might change, yet from this Forum’s Lens Patents topics I have noticed that the final element often creates a gentle alteration of the projection.

In my collection of old lenses they often have very similar diameters of this last/back/rear element. So..... Is it possible or ludicrous?
