R6 and Sigma 60-600 Sport - first two days
May 3, 2021
I finally gave in and traded in all my Fuji gear (and adapted Tamron glass) for an R6 and the Sigma. I just could not ignore all the YouTube videos and posts here showing off the animal ever AF and the amazing high ISO capabilities of this camera.
Guys, the AF is so good, the animal eye AF in particular. It feels like cheating when doing birding. I had gotten so good at technique in the field, getting good light, solid form with long lens, but Fuji X-T4 AF was just too big of a letdown. Time and again I would miss shots when I KNEW it was the fault of the AF system, not my own, or not the conditions.
The Canon R6 is a revelation, even after just two days of ownership and not knowing the first day how to really set it up with the double back button focus, etc. and mistakenly using the protect highlights setting (something that was essential to metering with M43 and APS-C to me in the past).
What Canon has done with AF is just mind blowing for someone who loves brands like Pentax and Fuji for their heritage and IQ. But damn, those two brands are dinosaurs right now regarding AF.
I will start by posting some of my old good shots on the Fuji… when the AF mostly hit…

And here is a good comparison to finish with because its the same nest hole as the Canon shots will show

And now with the R6, even in bad light. Just so much better ability to just shoot and watch those AF points track in challenging situations. And while I will grant that I have not done anything amazing with my birding, I feel for the first time that anything I lack is my own technique, not something dictated by the AF system I chose to stick with. It’s so freeing to chose your best composition, not just be stuck with the one or two images where focus locked.

I look forward to posting more as the weather holds and the warblers continue to come through, and this forum is full of great info and pleasant people.
