I know this is an old thread. I was searching for 'future of EOS-M' on the web and this thread was one of the results.

Back then, when Canon was slow in releasing M bodies or lenses, this question came up a lot.

I am surprised that the same question exists today after 2.5 years. What interests me with the M6.2 today is that it has Canon's best APS-C sensor, on par with the 90D. the 11-45 kit zoom and 22mm prime will meet most of my needs. I am exploring if there are good options for wildlife (like a 100-400 tele). Besides FF options, the EF-S 55-250 appears to be the longest focal length in APS-C.

I can relate to lot of the points in your essay. Most importantly, the PowerShot Pro1.

I bought one in 2005. It developed some sounds and uneven movement in the zoom right after the warranty expired! I contacted my credit card company because they automatically doubled the warranty on new electronics. They said that the camera could not be repaired and offered to take it back for refund of the full price. I replaced it with Rebel XTi.

As for objections to using a camera or taking photographs, I have a different story. I was at one of the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC. For convenience, I took a monopod with my XTi. The security lady stopped me because she said that 'selfie sticks' were not allowed That was still the beginning of phone cameras. They were not nearly as good as today's. I didn't realize it was already such a menace. I tried to explain to the lady that it was not a selfie stick but my wife convinced me to fold the monopod and put it in the bag.

Back in 2018, when you wrote this essay, I was using a D7200 for hobby. That summer and most of 2019, I got many requests for coverage of charity events (bike rides, 5K runs, indoor and outdoor concerts, etc.). So, I went full frame. I got a used D810 as my primary camera. These two bodies with the 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 zooms worked well for events. 2020 was mostly social isolation and no events. The only photos I took in the last year were of my cat (with different cameras and lenses) and the garden/flowers/woods behind the house.

No events still, but we plan to go out on short vacation trips within driving distance this summer. And I started looking for a camera smaller than DSLR, and small primes. I have been researching everything from the Fuji GFX100S (not small, nor cheap), Leica (super expensive), Z7.2 very likely choice), Fuji APS-C and the EOS-M (likely choice if not going FF).

That's how I landed on this thread. As I said above, the new sensor in M6.2 and the 22mm prime interest me a lot. I'm researching the primes for my use case.

Except for a big cost difference, Z7.2 is very tempting because it checks all boxes, it is not as big as a DSLR, has a class leading FF sensor, compact primes are due sometime soon, and the lens roadmap looks great.

This thread was a nice long read; thanks again
