Samyang RF 85mm F1.4

Hi forum fellows,

Just give some of my early impressions on this lens.

I recently got Samyang RF 85mm F1.4 used at a decent price. It works quite well on RP without knowing the firmware version. I guess it is on V1 given that last owner bought last September from a brick and mortar retailer and never updated firmware.

Servo AF with eye tracking works. Little af noise at continuous tracking eye or face but no louder than my other lenses.

Nice bokeh. Background bokeh is very smooth probably the smoothest I have ever used. Front bokeh shows a little more SA overcorrected but that's what you trade off for wide open sharpness.

Sharpness is good enough for RP resolution. Edge and corner sharpness I haven't tested so far only shooting my daughter indoor. At least center sharpness at F1.4 F2 are good enough for me.

No complaints on build and finish. It feels solid and well sealed. Feels very light my other lens is 100-400L II the torpedo my daughter likes to call it.

I have two issues wanting to find solution and share experience.

1 at Aperture below F2 there is a severe under exposure tendency. About 0.7EV-1EV underexposed. I like to shoot near wide open but exposure bothers me. It is from heavy vignette but I think it might trick Canon's metering system as well because from F1.8 to F2 the brightness change is quote dramatic. I attached two photos to show the difference, only resized by snapseed.

Do you guys change metering mode or add exposure comp +0.7EV when shooting this lens wide open?

2 yellowish tint on every picture. I think it is to do with auto white balance. Nothing can't be fixed by a slider in LR. The way I like to use my RP is more SOOC photos so a fixed white balance shift is needed to use this lens. I am still experimenting. B2 M2 is okay for indoor led light bulbs. Haven't tested outdoor it might change depending on light condition. Do you guys have any experience in Canon's White balance shift function?

Overall a keeper lens for me. I was tossing to get the RF lens station for extra $100 but now I might just use it as is until I upgrade to R6 or buy another Samyang RF lens. Please Samyang release new 24mmF1.8 in RF mount too.

Canon EOS R6
