Unusual scene at what was once one the busiest Canada-US border crossings. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic it has been closed to most travelers since April 2020. Easter long weekend here would otherwise be normally jammed with cars lined up for hours to cross this border.

Looking south towards the US border crossing into Washington State

But the strong desire to physically connect with loved ones there are Canadians, Americans meeting up in tents at one corner of the Peach Arch Park that remains open as it is operated by Washington State.

Washington State portion of Peace Arch Park at Zero Avenue. The ditch is the 49N parallel which marks the border. There are Canadian Mounties posted along this section of road.

I think I passed through that border crossing, some years back, on our way to Penticton!

Hi Tord, this is was the main crossing for car traffic and is the oldest. Highly likely you must came through here on your way to Pentiton. Do you remember stopping at the seaside town, White Rock, near here? The Peace Arch was built in 1912 and as far as I know the Canada-US border has never been closed since the Treaty of Ghent ending the war of 1812!

My memory plays tricks with me, evidently!

Using GMap, and talking with the wife, it is evident we passed the border elsewhere!

Going north we must have passed the border further inland, coming from Moses Lake. At Osoyoos, to be precise. And after our stay in Penticton and Kelowna, we drove west to Vancouver and took the ferry to Nanaimo, stayed there a week or so, and then visited people I met in Victoria in '67! Retired by then, of course, and then we drove to Tofino, flew around a little looking for whales (no luck), and stayed a couple of days in Victoria (quite a different city from the '67 version I lived in for some weeks as a kid).
Then ferry from Sydney to Fidalgo Island (stayed in Oak Harbor at a crazy Dutch place) and took the ferry from Clinton to meet our Seattle friend in Mukilteo, who escorted us into the very center of Seattle where he lives on the same street as the Bigfoot and the Hendersons movie was filmed, alas a few houses further up the street from his!

The rest of our stay was spent in New England (after a week in Seattle).
