Good, affordable mirrorless camera

So I had a Nikon D3300 before with a 18-140mm 1.8f and 50mm lenses. It was a great setup, that allowed me to take some better than smartphone photos - I have a tripod so I could take some long exposure shots, zoom in whenever I want and crop it later, take low light shots, etc.

Until it fell into the sea a week ago and stopped working that is ^^

Now since I have to buy a new one, I started reading about mirrorless cameras and it looks pretty interesting. I was looking at Sony A6400, I could get it under $1000, looks good but apparently there is a lot of noise above 2000 ISO so it's probably not as good in low light conditions.

Are there any alternatives that are as versatile, still have a crop sensor, and have better low light capabilities? I'm kind of afraid that if I buy it, it would perform worse in low light conditions than my old D3300.
