Comparing 35GM and 135GM magnification at MFD

Preparing to shoot a few plant portraits in this evening's nice warm light, I took some handheld shots of a Horse Chestnut bud using 35GM and 135GM. I was interested to see how they compared for magnification and "look" at a couple of wide apertures.

Both lenses were set to manual focus and minimum focus distance. The same camera was used and identical adjustments were applied to each which were cropped square for the composite.

On paper, the magnifications of the two lenses should be pretty similar at about quarter life size. In practice, the composite shows they're *very* similar. Almost identical in fact. As are their "looks".

Doesn't make it any easier choosing which one to take for close-up work on a macro trip! But that's not exactly a terrible problem to have...

Here's an uncropped image (source 62 mpix FF) to show the degree of crop used above. Each square crop was exactly the same size (in pixels).
