in the BMD cameras there are only two level of gain and exposure is just a display setting

Some BMD cameras are dual ISO.

Some are dual gain but a single ISO.

Some are just single ISO
Depends on the sensor family.

JB

All sensors made by mainstream manufacturers have an onboard PGA with variable gain usually in steps of 1 dB or 1/3 of a stop

Original BMCC, Pocket Cinema Camera, Micro cinema camera, URSA Mini 4.6K, URSA Mini Pro, URSA Mini Pro g2 are all dual gain sensors (Fairchild sCMOS) for extended DR. 22 bit( 2 x 11 bit)  Similar to Alexa and recently some Canon cameras (DGO)

Pocket 4K/6K/6K Pro are dual ISO sensors. (Sony)

The URSA Mini Pro 12K is their own unique custom sensor design from the ground up.
