Getting the eyes in focus

Hi Everyone:

In portraiture, I don't think there is a stringent rule regarding getting the eyes in focus, whether one eye or both eyes should be in focus, etc. However, there seems to be a lot of individual preferences. There also seems to be general agreement that at least one eye should be in focus.

So, given that I work with a very shallow DOF for my recent projects, I want to develop guidelines for which eye should be in focus. Here is what I have come up with: The closest eye should be in focus. To judge which eye is closest either determine which side of the face is showing more of the ear OR which eye is closest to the center of the image.

I wouldn't mind getting feedback on this guideline. If you have anything to add, please do.

Thanks,

-Charles
