I used to frequent all of the NYC photo stores in the 1960s.  Peerless was on the east side, near Grand Central, Willoughbys was near Macys, as were several other similar big camera stores.  I liked Willoughbys the most back then, partly because it was easier for me to get to from Brooklyn.  It was a huge store with about everything one could want photographically.  I walked into the new store one day and nearly cried.  I only bought a lens cleaning kit but the workers seemed pretty knowledgeable.  There was also 42nd Street Photo which was off 6th avenue, that was considered a more discounted store, but was legitimate, unlike its similar namesake now.
