My style of shooting is very close, almost micro shots at 5 feet or less, narrow aperture is needed to create the right depth of field. I want my subject mostly in focus at this close range.
My Zoo pics....I’ve tried f/8 and yes the ISO drops but I want more depth of field (1/2 of the subject in focus).
Birds at the Zoo are very close, from 3 feet to 25 feet. So play with apertures till I’m happy with results.

My rule of thumb, I double my shutter speed at focal length. Example: At 400mm at least 1/800sec. Since my local conditions are constantly changing (sun to cloudy in seconds), my camera setup is set at high shutter speed with a narrow aperture at all times.

EXIF data is correct. First 2 pics are in the sun, the other pics are not.
