An ant or wasp
3

This was the safety shot. It was cold and covered in dew drops.  It wasn't going anywhere.

The mandibles look heavy duty. The eyes are small and round.

The small round eyes and the antenna make me think it is a winged ant and not a wasp.  It is about 2 cm long.

Australia has ants from 1.5 mm to 5 cm.

This is the Queensland fruit fly.

It is beautiful but destroys a lot of fruit.  It has an ovipositor like a syringe that they use to pierce unripe fruit.  The maggot putrefies the fruit.  When it is mature enough, it drops to the ground and pupates underground.
