Wildlife/bird photo dilemma

I am not primarily a wildlife or bird photographer but enjoy it occasionally and am planning a trip to some national parks this summer.

I have a Z6ii and have had a good experience using the FTZ adapter with the AF-P 70-300mm lens, but I find that I could use more reach, especially for birds. I am torn between purchasing  a 150-600 lens (Nikon, Sigma, or Tamron) or a DX body (D500 or D7200) and using the 70-300. I recognize I couldn't reach 600 but think the 450 equivalent would likely be sufficient.  I'm interested in hearing about others' experiences with one or both of these setups.
