100-400 S

I expect the 100-400 S is gonna be the replacement for the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR and it'll

  • be very sharp at 400, unlike the 80-400G
  • work well with TC, unlike the 80-400G
  • probably be f/4.5-5.6, just like the 80-400G
  • be lighter than the 80-400G, which was a bit heavy IMO
  • be weather sealed, just like the 80-400G
  • cost about $3-3.5K US, a bit more than the 80-400G (which was $2.7K when introduced)

I owned the 80-400G since it's introduction until recently and it was one of my most loved and used lenses. Given the excellence of the S lineup, I expect the 100-400 S will surpass the 80-400G in every respect. I can't wait to get my hands on it. So given Nikon's recent history of delivery delays, I'm putting in a pre-order at my LCS to ensure I'll be one of the first in line to get it.
