I think you are right.

I have never turned it off on any of my cameras (as I can remember). But I am not shooting astro and very seldom using flash.

It gives you an idea of what the shot will look like. Personally I rely on this far more than the histogram which is supposedly 'wrong' as it's not as accurate, but I get good results so it works for me.

The problem occurs when you are using flash, or doing light painting or astrophotography, as you'll often see a completely dark screen. You can turn Exp Sim OFF so you should get some image on the LCD - just enough to help with framing - or you can take the shot, view, adjust and repeat till you get what you want.
