TCs and AF: The Gray Hole

I've been getting a comprehensive lesson in how much TCs suck (light up) with both a DSLR and a MILC. The mirrorless is vastly superior at focusing in already dim light, almost never failing at longer zoom lengths and hence smaller apertures.

The DSLR won't even give a confirmation beep for manual focusing, let alone autofocus at anything but the shortest and widest-aperture zoom setting.

Problem is, holding my wannabee birding rig mounted on my dwarf mirrorless body is beyond miserable.

Natch, it's been constant heavy overcast since I got my TC; withholding judgement till there is a normal photon level out there, but I can see myself chucking the TC and relying on faster shutter speeds and cropping.
