Nikon 600mm f4d afs Mark 1 vs 600mmf4G

Hi all, this has probably been answered in another thread but I haven't had any luck finding the specific info I need so apologies for repeating info if I am.

Anyway, I'm looking at buying a used Nikon 600mmf4d afs the first version, it's a good price and a lot cheaper than the G. I dont need VR as I use a long lens on a gimbal.

I already use the 200-500 which is a great lens for handheld and I also use the 500mm f4P ( manual focus) sometimes with a converter. To be fair even for an older lens the prime still beats the zoom for acuity,  slightly but noticable. Obviously being a manual lens its tricky to get in focus hence my interest in the 600mm. ( for Wildlife)

Sorry to be long winded, but has anyone had the 600afd then moved to the 600VR G? Is there a big difference in results? I'd hate to invest in the lens only to be disappointed, and wish I'd saved for the later version.

Thanks in advance.
