Get the longest lens you can afford, in wildlife photography you'll want more reach on many, many days. Although a good tripod is always nice if you're going to be holding a heavy camera/lens combo for any length of time, you certainly don't need it to obtain satisfactory images. I usually hand-hold, with some practice you can develop a steady hand which gives you a lot more flexibility, and a lot less weight; I use a monopod with a tilt head when I'm hiking in dim light and a tripod with an inexpensive gimbal when sitting in a blind
