XE2 is the best
2
I have had all 3 and the XE2 is easily the best. Bigger better EVF than the 3, D pad, no touchscreen (keeps things simple and enjoyable, but its easy to disable), flash, nicer feel in my hands.
But there is a small chance I might get an XE3 as a 2nd camera as it adds Acros B&W film simulation and it has 50% more megapixels, so will be better for when I crop a lot with my fisheye lens. Its also a bit faster focusing, but not as big a jump as the jump from the 1 to the 2. But I am more likely to get an XT20 instead for their easy to use flip screen and extra control wheel, D pad and flash. I ordered one today but they called and said no black available. I never buy silver cameras but will probably go ahead with the XT20 in silver despite black XE3s being cheaper, as an XE3 would always be annoyingly worse than the XE2. The XT would be a camera for different situations like when I will use the screen more.
The 3's EVF is an issue for maybe 25% of people, but more notice it is worse. So I recommend trying in a store if possible. If that's not possible there is a greater risk you won't like the cheaper EVF if you wear glasses.
The XE1 has nice JPGs, but it's terribly slow: shutter lag, EVF lag and slow autofocus. Plus only white focus peaking when manual focusing. Body is the same as the XE2.
The XE2 resembles the X PRO 1 if you look at the front rubber grip and thumb rest on the rear. It's like a mini X Pro. A fun, simple rangefinder style camera. The 3 went away from that with things removed or replaced (I find the joystick fiddly) and touchscreen added (complicating things) and the 4 has gone even more in that touchscreen and minimal direction away from X Pro styling. Some say the build quality felt worse after the XE2.
