The Nikon 16-35mm f4 is fantastic for waterfalls.  As often is the case with waterfalls you are limited in how much you can move around I really do think that a zoom is a better choice than a fixed focal length lens.  Back to the 16-35, it actually has minimal distortion in the 20-24 range, and it is very sharp from center to corner once you stop down to f8 or lower.   While ultra or wide angle lenses are normally good for waterfalls, often the waterfall is far enough away that you need a longer focal length.  For those shots, I normally use my 24-120.
