Judging from the examples from Gigapixel that were posted above, I beg to disagree.

They won't show samples where it doesn't work so well; there are plenty online. Enhancing detail that is there already is NOT the same as recording more detail; Thomas Anderson is correct. Smaller/finer details may get "guessed" by software when interpolating up.  Sometimes upsampling "looks pretty good" and sometimes not and sometimes just bad.

This is most apparent with small, fine, intricate details where one needs to provide a high-res file for crop or print or whatever the end user might need. Upsampling, even with the "AI enhanced" software can really get fine detail wrong, and small faces in large groups, unless there is a LOT of resolution there to begin with. There is no resolution-creation going on, so no extra detail created, just existing detail enhanced.
