I’d like to tap the forum’s collective wisdom.
My daughter’s final high school musical production is about a month away and I’ve been asked to video record it.
Due to Covid, the production will be outdoors, at twilight, in a field surrounded by very large, old trees on three sides and a massive church on the other. Point being, I’m not expecting much in the way of natural light. Worse, I’ve just learned the school has decided not to light the stage area .... something about liability. Don’t ask, I’m just a Dad / occasional unofficial photographer for the theater program.
The camera is the M6 II. Lens options are:
- Canon EF-M 22/2
- Canon EF-M 32/1.4
- Canon EF 50/1.4
- Tamron EF 70-200 2.8 G2
I don’t yet know where I’ll be positioned or how close to the “stage” I’ll get to be. If I’m close enough, I could do a static shot of the whole stage with any of the primes. That said, I am leaning towards the zoom so I can focus on specific performers during their solos. (And no, I don’t have (and my wife is not going to let me buy) a second body. Back to that “just a Dad” thing whose wife is pretty sure I’ve already spent too much on camera gear.)
Questions:
- I don’t do a lot of video, so any general recommendations?
- Obviously, I’m concerned about the poor lighting. If I go with the zoom, does it make sense to add a Viltrox Speedbooster to give me both more range flexibility and improved light capture?
- On the flip side, I’m worried about focus. Normally, I’d want to stop down so the entire stage is in focus on the wide shots. Not sure how to balance that with the poor lighting.
- I’m contemplating capturing in 4K. Anyone have overheating issues recording 60-90 minutes in 4K? Should I stick with 1080?
- Lastly, how do I keep my M6II powered and recording for that long (29:59 limit notwithstanding)? Just swap batteries when I hit the recording limit?
Sorry, lots of questions. But thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to share.
