C70 with 24-105 EF L mark 1

Hello all,

I was kindly directed to this forum from the EOS R one as my query is video specific.

I'm looking to push the button on a C70, as I have the 24-105 Ef L I (original one) and the 50mm 1.8 as well, and would buy the 0.71 focal reducer to make this happen.

I am just conscious of the fact that these lenses are 'unsupported' at the moment. I think this means that certain functions of the lens might be compromised but I'm not sure to what extent. (Canon couldn't offer a great deal of help when I contacted them a few weeks ago.) But I read recently that CA and peripheral illumination correction may not function at all. Plus the known AF compromises.

In this regard, would you say it is a false economy to stick with an unsupported, older lens, just because of the sheer fact I already have it? I have read that the IQ of this lens will still hold up to modern lenses and I did use it with success on my C100. I'm using it on a 8mp sensor, not a 60mp one afterall!

However I have also heard people singing the praises of the new RF mount lenses and how vastly superior they are. The problem with the RF mounts for me with the C70, is the inability to use the speedbooster, meaning I will suffer the crop factor.

Due to the type of work I do, I really cannot manage lens changes during a shoot. A FF equivalent range of 24-105 - or similar - is essential for me. I need it to be nice and wide on the wide end, with plenty of zoom possibility.

Has anyone used the original 24-105 EF L lens on a modern 4k sensor camera? Does it perform? How much impact might the lack of CA and PE correction actually be in the real world?

A forum member also suggested that the Metabones Speedbooster may offer more functionality than the Canon one.

I have considered keeping the 24-105 for my 5D classic and moving to Sony and their full frame FX6 with their version of the 24-105..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks

Jim
