I recently got the second gen. push-pull D version which I find to be one of Nikon's greatest bargains. With this one you can use the focus confirmation dot as well as peaking and magnified view. I suggest peaking first to get it roughly right, then use the white dot and green frame for accuracy. This can normally be done pretty quickly. For wide open or critical focussing, it's not bad to do a manual magnified view as well. A combination of the three in that order ideally will give a high level of focus accuracy.

IBIS works quickly nicely on this lens, giving around three stops. Usually at 200mm around 1/20 to 1/25 is sharp and at 80mm about 1/10.
