Rendering a new classification to sell stuff with

I'm confused, rendering, what exactly does this mean?

I'm from the film days. Nikon produced a 43-86mm zoom that I believe today would qualify as having a unique 'rendering'. It was soft and  loaded with untold levels of distortion. It also has awful flare and ghosts.

Would this be called a lens with character today?

We just called it a bad lens back then.
