Re: advice on pocket hiking camera

Yes, G5X II seems sadly to be the best camera available for my needs, and i do like the close focus, however

  • g5x II only has usb-c powercharge so no charging on the road with a powerbank
  • missing microphone port, which even the g7x iii now have
  • missing a hot shoe
  • video record limit 30 minutes (10 min 4k)

And Chris of course does show it has the most touch-friendly grip on the market

Really would like

  • microphone port (i have a red micro)
  • ability to video lectures of one hour duration
  • a good solid grip (also fine if optional)
  • no fiddly lens cap (always a struggle with gloves)
  • hot shoe (for my wonderful voightlander viewfinders)
  • in-camera usb charging (with normal powerbank)
  • less than 400gram total (maybe one light extra lens)
  • a3 printable in low light (i have a a3+ printer)

I would check G5X II, seems like best fit for your use:
