To be clear, you can plug the Z7 into a PC using the USB interface and it will indeed present a file structure that you can open, copy, paste, etc. to your PC through any file manager you like, including Windows File Explorer or the supplied Nikon software. It will not be as fast as a USB 3.x card reader, but it works just fine.

You cannot update the firmware in the Z7 without a card reader because the Z7 connected to the PC is basically a read-only device. Thus using the camera connected to the PC there is no way to transfer the updated firmware file (that you download onto your PC from Nikon's website) from your PC to the memory card in the camera.

If you want to save money, there are some cheap XQD memory card readers available that work just fine.
