Acros - beauty or bete noir?
4

It all started when I bought an X-T1 to supplement my X-T2. I had been using the Acros sim, but that's not available on the X-T1, so I used the standard b/w.

I was surprised to find I was preferring the look of files from the X-T1.

A quick test of shots on the X-T2 - Acros vs b/w -confirmed my preference. Acros was suppressing shadow detail, adding a lot of grain, and even seemed slightly less sharp.

I shot film for 40 years and considered heavy grain a necessary evil in low light with fast film. Acros is laying on the grain even at base iso.

I have seen many superb shots on the net taken with Acros. But for my money the standard b/w gives a more flexible file - it's easy enough to add contrast and grain in post as required.

I'm not trying to convert anyone here, but there may be togs (I'm one) who accepted the superiority of Acros without question.

Live long and prosper!
