Seems that a FF a few years from now will have to go against Fuji aggressive pricing of their 100 mp medium format cameras
with the 100s now 6 grand one of of 3 things could happen
1) Sigma would have to price the FF FOVEON at about 3 grand after 6 years of $$$$$$ development to attract potential Fuji MF customers
2) Fuj could counter with a 150 mp sensor
3) Fuji could create a dedicated Monochrome to steal the hi rez landscape hobbyists
4) advancements in AI software such as DXO " DEEP PRIME" are allowing the high iso images to reach astounding quality in even small micro 4/3 sensor cameras - this software wont work with foveon putting Sigma at an enormous disadvantage if the new sensor is a daytime only type camera in the same vein as the SD15
Then you don't understand why people shoot with foveon cameras. I'm not interested in shooting bland night scenes with my SD Quattro or DPXM's, I have other cameras that will do that far better. I wanted a camera, that at ISO 100, will capture the colour and nuance of a landscape scene, with excellent detail. I don't mind carrying a tripod, setting up and composing is a cathartic and enjoyable process for me. I enjoy the simple mechanics of foveon cameras, no bells and whistles that I don't want, everything that I need. All this is done with cameras and lenses I didn't spend a fortune on and are already paid for. I would only ever upgrade to another foveon camera that might have a better viewfinder, or faster focusing, but neither are deal breakers for me.
I have no need to chase anything else, the latest and greatest, to give me what I want, I already have it. My camera will spit out images that need virtually no editing, so I can concentrate on what I really enjoy, which is photography itself, not spending hours in front of a computer. I can print to huge sizes already if I wish, I have 39mp to play with, way more than enough for anything I will print or display. Shooting foveon is the next best thing to shooting film, that's why I shoot with it. There are thousands of alternatives for other things, I'm happy being an outlier, a niche photographer, who wants to be part of the herd?
Why try and compete with something that already exists? the uniqueness of foveon cameras is what makes them special, the look of the images and the quirkyness of the cameras, the world would be a very boring place if we all liked the same thing, so you can keep your AI driven photography thanks and I'll stick to what I love to shoot with, and hopefully Sigma will carry on doing what they do best, being different.
