My son is playing HS baseball and many of his games are at night. I currently have a D500 and 70-200E and 200-500. The 70-200 is short at times and at night the 200-500 is too slow. How good for AF are the older 300 f/2.8? Do the AF-S non VR autofocus fast? What about the older screwdrive 300s? How is the AF on that? I am sure the newer VR models are even better, but they are too expensive for me.

In the alternative, i might get the 1.4 III for the 70-200, but I really think I need 2.8 speed

The AF-S 300mm 2.8 Non-VR (rough texture version) or the AF-S II non-VR (smooth texture) has a solid IQ but I am not sure it will be worthy of upgrade or investment since you have 70-200 E FL with VR already. AF speed might be similar/tiny bit slower than the 70-200 FL?  But if you do, I would recommend the AF-S II (smooth) version over the rough texture AF-S I, since it's the lightest Nikon's 300mm 2.8+ the AF motor in Ver II is a bit more reliable.

Older AF-D 300mm on your D500 would be definitely slower and less reliable compare to 70-200mm as well.
