Sterile photos?

Ever had a lens that was just excellent in every respect (technically) but that you don't like the photos all that much because they are too "sterile"?  This quality is more and more common (IMO) with variable aperture zooms.  The engineering and production is first rate.  The images are sharp, contrasty and have punchy colors.  Yet.... something is lacking, or, if not lacking, then uncompelling.

I find my primes do not have this limitation (or, not really limitation... this artifact).  I am pretty sure it has to do with selective DOF.  There is just something about pin sharp subject and blurry background that can't be duplicated with a variable aperture zoom.  Example, shot long ago with a 28mm 1.8.  One of my favorite pictures.
