I paid $1500 for a miraculous 8 MP 10D 18 years ago. 10 years ago is was $1200 for an 18 MP 7D. Many people are still satisfied with their 10 year old DSLRs and see no need to upgrade. Add in the 10 years of purchasers since then and its easy to understand why new camera sales have fallen. Technology has long since reached a level of excellent image quality, its only features that they're adding now.
Nobody needs the latest and greatest computer, car, or camera any more unless you are just a latest and greatest geek.
And you forgot to add the inflation factor...
Your point is well taken, As our travels are limited, I am digging back in time and look at S50 (remember it?) pictures. Eons ago. 5 Mgs. Still enjoyable to look at.
Some people like technology for the heck of it. Some hate it. I have friends in both camps.
I bought an M100 because I could not lift a DSLR (6D) after a shoulder incident. It was like an S50 on steroids -- kidding. But it fit the bill ten and does now, as an easy to walk around camera. I even upgrade to the M50 when released!
I did not buy them for their technology (quite good), but for their weight and size. IQ and interchangeable lenses were a side benefit. When I bought an RP, I kept the M bodies and lenses. I use them both, and find the combination very convenient. Is an M50 II on my list? Maybe. If I reach the M100/M50 limits, that may a long time coming.
Well said! My M100 with the kit lens is as if my SD200 16 years ago, small, lightweight and good IQ.
