I have to disagree strongly here.

I think Canon was very shrewd in their placement of the M System in their hierarchy. Everything M is small, light, and inexpensive, and this preference, this need, this unique combination of features will be sought after by photographers even after smartphones have maxxed out their physical capabilities and the R system has been fleshed out.

Photography is not dead. There will always be the desire for actual ART in the human experience. And the M System stands as the "middle school" of the Photographic World. There'll be people coming up from the "grade schools" (phone cams), and there will be people advancing to "college" (FF+), but RIGHT HERE is where the real learning goes on.

I have no worries that the M will disappear. And at least in my own life it will won't. It occupies a unique middle ground that my handy iPhone, and my vaunted R5 just cannot touch.  So I say don't stress over it.
