I would not want to use the 2x on the a7riv, with any lens, and really not even on the a9 if at all possible.

Curious about why. For shots like you demonstrated, it's very good.

This photo is not sharp, at all.

Go back and look at the pics at 100% view, it's obvious.

Focus was not on eye, but stands up well when limited to full-screen.

Very funny. Who views and/or prints in 100%?

People who care about resolution and p.q., obviously.

So, no important users.

So, important users can't tell the difference between sharpness and mush. Got it.

I think most of the serious bird photographers peek at 100%. I started about a year ago, and I'm still just doing it for fun. But I'd seen what others can do, and I do peek at 100% now. One guy, he had consistently post very sharp BIF with 600GM+2x+[a9ii/a7riv/a7c/a1], and none of my 2x came close. I do have some luck with the 1.4x, but I still leave it out most of the time, and almost never on the 200-600.

Here are the types of sharpness (best view @ 100%) I was hoping for using the 2x (sorry about the downscaled to 1600 on the long side; someone took my online photos and posted as his own, and since then I always downscale).

No telecoverter.
