You might be able to use Exiftool for this. I don't like sequential filenames like DSC01234.ARW, so I rename every photo using the image time stored in the file metadata, with names based on year-month-day-hour-minute-second (e.g., 20210303_074020z.arw for an image taken 2021 March 3 at 07:40:20 UT). Renaming is the first step in my workflow, even before triaging and deleting. The free software I use to do this is Exiftool (https://exiftool.org/), which supports at least some video formats. I don't shoot video, only stills, so I don't know for sure if it would work for your friend's clips.
