EF-EOS R Adapter - Lens AF is dead intermittently?

I just got my R6 and new adapter (which I got on ebay) and the first lens to try was my EF 50mm 1.4 USM. Right off the bat, it's dead - no AF at all. Then I pointed it at subjects with different distances from me and then sometimes it would snap in, other times not. I have had no problems with it on my 5DMIII, or 6D. Then I tried my workhorse EF 35mm 1.4L and it was fine - until a couple of times when it wasn't. Then the same with my EF 24-105 f4L. Definitely worst on my 50mm. I know so many of you have not been able to get an adapter to test it but, but do you think the adapter pins might be off a little or something? I don't think it would be intermittent and there is no looseness or play in the adapter attached to the body. Please let me know your thoughts - or could it be the camera? Thanks, Bill

PS are all these adapters made in Taiwan?  The one I have was.
