I think that you're caught in a "Catch-22". A lens for a full-frame sensor is going to be necessarily large and heavy. I have a little 5', 100-lb friend that hand holds a Canon R5 with an EF 100-400mm lens, BUT she has no pinched nerves.

An E 70-350mm G on a crop sensor body, like a 6600, will give you the pixel density roughly matching an a7RIII in crop mode. That's got the field of vision equal to a 525mm lens on a full-frame body and it'll be way, way lighter than a full-frame rig. It'll give you more cropping potential than the 1" sensor in the RX-10, with very good AF.

Yes, you'll give up some to an ultimate rig, like an a1 with a 600mm GM, but many people, perhaps including you, would injure themselves if they tried to lug that around. Being safe and in the hobby for years to come is more important than having the ultimate rig.

Check out these bird shots on Flickr, using the E 70-350mm on various bodies:

Lots of good stuff there.

Dave,

You summed it up nicely...definitely a "catch 22" situation. Given my experiences with the XT3/100-400, I know that I can handle the Sony 100-400 weight. For hikes or if the pinched nerve acts up, I use the RX10IV.

So, I'm not considering the 70-350..especially as I want a longer reach. I've narrowed my choice down to the A9+100-400+1.4xTE or the A7RIV+100-400 in crop mode. The idea of also having an option to go the route of an A7RIV+100-400+1.4xTE (non-crop) and A7R4IV+100-400+1.4xTE+crop mode is of particular interest, though appreciate (though not from experience!) what I will lose with respect to AF (vs the A9).

Given my "catch 22" situation, I DO need to compromise...but am thinking (hoping) that the A7RIV AF will be better than the XT3 and at least match the RX10IV. I do want the best AF possible (so the A9 is a no-brainer) but also very much value the reach.
