How much difference can Sharpen AI make for a cheap lens?

I'm looking at the idea of buying the Canon R5, whose 45mp sensor will produce better images at sizes up to 24x16 than my current 26.2mp Canon 6DII. I'm also considering the purchase of the Sigma 150-600 telephoto zoom lens, but it's the less expensive version, costing only $900. Of course, at the high end images are going to be soft, so I'm wondering how much Sharpen AI can simulate the restoration of detail.

All of this is assuming that the EF adapter ring for the R5 will handle the Sigma, which I'd think it should. At 600mm the lens should be a real test for Sharpen AI, and I can only guess what kind of strain the software would go through if I buy the 2x extender, and max it out to 1,200 mm.

Thanks for all comments and opinions.
